What is VCI technology, and how does it work?
VCI technology (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor) is a patented technology that has been used by the Military, NASA, and the Automotive Industries since 1977. The chemistry is straight forward. The VCI molecules, when released into a given area, vaporize and are attracted to all metal surfaces where they form a thin transparent film about one or two microns thick. This molecular film prevents the interaction of air and moisture from getting to the metals surface, thereby preventing rust and corrosion.

How long does it take for these VCI vapors to start working?
It varies depending on what product you're using. For instance, all liquid and aerosol products have VCI’s in them. Once they are applied to the metal surface the contact is immediate. What makes these products and the technology even more unique is the fact that as these products are applied, any vapors are drawn to the adjacent metal surfaces, like a recessed screw head for example. This is what sets our products apart from any other rust preventatives on the market today. Our technology works in both liquid and vapor phase.

Does this mean that the vapors go wherever air and moisture go?
Exactly! That’s the advantage of this technology. Any metal surface is protected from moisture molecules attacking the surface. Think of it similarly to dust being drawn to a computer screen and attaching itself, that’s exactly how VCI vapors react when they are near a metal surface. The VCI vapors will actually displace, or push moisture off the metals surface because it is a heavier molecule that wants to bond to a metals surface, thereby displacing the moisture molecule. Even the tightest crevices where liquids can’t go, the VCI vapors will, protecting all metal surfaces that are exposed to air and moisture vapor.

Does it matter what type of metal surface we’re talking about, or if the surface is painted or not?
No. The VCI molecules work with all metal surfaces, chrome, aluminum, cast iron, etc. with no effect on the appearance of the metals surface. Remember we’re talking about one or two microns thick, nothing you would actually see with the naked eye.

How long will the VCI’s in the Car and Motorcycle Cocoon last, and how many times can the cocoon be opened and closed before all the VCI vapors are used up or lost?
That depends on if there are any harsh chemical contaminants in the atmosphere, but under normal circumstances, say in a garage for example, you would have to open and close the car cocoon numerous times for all of the vapors to be used up in the contained space. Normally though, you will have years of corrosion protection providing you keep the Cocoon zipped up and stored in a container like a box or a garbage can (30 gallon) when not in use.

What is the difference between your Classic Car and Motorcycle Cocoons and other covers, or Car or Motorcycle Bags?

This is the question we get asked most often. Canvas, cloth, or polyethylene Car/Motorcycle Bags or covers will not protect a stored classic car or motorcycle. In fact, they accelerate rust and corrosion and act as a breeding ground by holding moisture and humidity in… not keeping it out.Here's what makes our Cocoons different from anything else on the market today, and why the Military and Automotive Industry use our technology to mothball and store equipment and aircraft.

When the vehicle is enclosed in the cocoon, even though there might be some water or moisture present say after you have washed and dried your vehicle, its not completely dry. Hard to reach areas for example. The VCI molecules will migrate to all of the metal surfaces, displacing and bonding to the metal not allowing the two things that cause oxidation to begin in the first place, air and moisture. Best of all, should the molecules ever get scratched away, new vapor molecule will migrate to that surface forming a new electrochemical seal protecting the surface.

Made of three layered material the cover is water resistant on the outside, the middle layer has the VCI Corrosion Inhibitor mastic, and the contact layer close to your car is a soft spun polyolefin, non abrasive lining that wicks away the moisture with exclusive capillary action. The breathable action allows the cover to let moisture escape out not trapping it in!

This is the key that sets us apart from other Car and Motorcycle Bags; The middle layer. The middle layer is impregnated with the VCI chemical that is in the mastic. These VCI’s will migrate to all of the metal surfaces once the vehicle is placed inside the Cocoon, and will begin to provide corrosion protection within a few hours, and last for many, many years to come.

Once you take the vehicle out of the Cocoon, zip the Cocoon back up and place it in the box or some other receptacle so the VCI’s will stay contained inside the Cocoon. Otherwise, if you leave it in your garage opened up, the VCI’s in the Cocoon will attach themselves to anything metal in the garage and decrease the longevity of the corrosion protecting cocoon. We do not recommend that the Car or Motorcycle Cocoon be used outdoors as wind can whip the Cocoon against the vehicle, possibly damaging the finish, and it is not totally waterproof either.

Is VCI technology a desiccant that absorbs moisture, like the metal canisters you buy when you buy those plastic Car and Motorcycle Bags, or like those silicate gels packets you throw inside?

Absolutely not! Desiccants have a threshold which overtime absorbs its maximum amount of moisture thus rendering them ineffective. The real problem is that they say you can reuse these canisters by drying them out in an oven. But who’s to say when they are no longer absorbing the humidity and moisture which is now trapped inside the bag where your car is! These issues are the very reason that the Military and Automotive Industries are no longer using the moisture absorbing technology. It’s outdated and eventually becomes ineffective.

These time tested products provide long term, environmentally safe, non-toxic solutions that will give you years of rust and corrosion protection, so you can enjoy that Classic Car and Motorcycle of yours, instead of hassling with the rust, corrosion and oxidation on it all the time! Finally, we apologize for the answers being somewhat lengthy, but we feel its important you understand a little bit about the VCI technology, and what sets us apart from the other Garbage bag with a zipper products that have the metal canister desiccant inside, or silicate gel pellets.

Limited Warranty

Corrosion Control Outdoors (CCO), LLC warrants this product will be free from defects when shipped to customer. CCO’s obligation under this warranty shall be limited to replacement of product that proves to be defective. To obtain replacement product under this warranty, the customer must notify CCO of the claimed defect within six months after shipment of product to customer. Customer shall pay all freight charges for replacement or return of product. CCO, LLC shall have no liability for any injury, loss or damage arising out of the use of or misuse of this product. BEFORE USING, USER SHALL DETERMINE THE SUITABILITY OF THE PRODUCT FOR ITS INTENDED USE, AND USE ASSUMES ALL RISK AND LIABILITY WHATSOEVER IN CONNECTION THEREWITH. No representation or recommendation not contained herein shall have any force or effect unless in a written document signed by an Officer of CCO, LLC. In no case shall CCO, LLC be liable for incidental or consequential damages.
